RACE DIARY ENTRY: 6/7/2008
By Marty "Crash" Grilley

After messing around with the carb some more this week, I decided to go down another couple sizes on the jets to lean out the motor some more and pull some more power out of it.

I started heat race number 1 on the outside of row 2, right behind the #8 of Tayne Reurink (don't ask me how to pronounce that name!). At the drop of the green, I stayed glued to Tayne's bumper on the high side for a lap or so to see how things would settle in. Wow, I didn't think Tayne was this fast! It was pretty much all I could do to hang on to his bumper. For the most part, the race ended up kind of follow the leader, at least from my vantage point. With about 2 laps to go, I decided to try to run a bit higher going into turn 1 to try to get around him. I knew it was still a bit wet up there, but I wanted to at least give it a try. Mistake #1 for the night. Way too wet up there yet. I just about slid off the top of the track. By the time I got 'er back under control, 3 cars got under me! Luckily there was only a lap and a half left. I should be able to hang on to a transfer spot if I just stay in the groove and behave myself. That is what I did and I ended up finishing 5th, the final transfer spot into the "A".

After the heat race, I did a plug check and decided to leave the carb alone for a change. There wasn't really enough laps on the new plugs to really tell what was going on yet.

For the feature, I started 4th, right behind Tim Waltner. He is usually very fast, so I will just hang with him for a couple laps until we settled in for the race. To be honest, most of this race was kind of a blur, so I will move towards the end and give you the highlights of the finish. At this point in the race, with about five laps complete, we had already had two cautions. Who ever caused a yellow after the first two, is automatically given the black flag. I was running 4th at this point just trying to make something happen, when I felt someone get into my left rear and I felt my tire go flat. I tried to hang on for a lap or two until a caution came out so that I could come in and change the tire. I was finally told by the officials that I had to come in. As soon as I pulled in, the caution came out. That figures! I was screwed either way. If I stopped on the track to draw a caution, I would have been given a black flag. If I stayed out long enough, I would be given the black flag. Which I was. So I ended up finishing 15th for the night.

My car was fast and finally running perfectly! Now I know I can compete and don't have to worry about carb issues any more.

Time to go home, change a tire, do the routine maintenance and come back next week. Nothing major! That is always a good week, when there is no big repairs to be made.
