RACE DIARY ENTRY: 6/21/03
By Marty "Crash" Grilley
Man, it's a windy one today! This should be an interesting day. I get to start off the night being a guest on our local racing radio program on KELO-AM. It has been a while since I have been on the radio. In case you didn't know, I was a DJ for about 11 years, so I was looking forward to getting back on the air. I have never been interviewed before, so that was different. I was on for about 10 minutes talking about racing, sponsors, upcoming stuff, etc.
Well, I hope we have the plug wire problem fixed. This has been getting old. The gremlins have gotten a hold of us and it is starting to hurt. In the last 2 nights, I have dropped from 4th to 7th in points.
Well, things are not starting out as planned. Towards the end of packing the track, the car is starting to have a miss again. I hope it's not that plug wire again! It is! After changing back to our backup "stock" wires, during the heat race the same problem pops up AGAIN! At least I still finished 3rd and transfer directly to the A. The car handled great when the car was up to speed. At least that part we don't have to worry about.
The parts trailer didn't have the plug wires I wanted, so I ended up talking Scott Borstadt into letting my buy his backup set. This better fix the problem.
I am starting 10th tonight. Keep your fingers crossed. Green Flag!!! For the first 2 laps, the car ran pretty good. Then the car developed the sputtering again. I am starting to think that we have a fuel problem. At this point I am just along for the ride. I did the best I could only running about half of every lap at full speed. Thanks God this race was caution free for a change. It made it a little less painful. I finish 16th again. Not last again, but not good.
In talking with Jerry and a couple other drivers in the pits, it was decided that the electrical problem was solved, but now we lost the fuel pump. Over the last 3 nights of racing, a total of about $20 in parts have kept us from good finishes! These gremlins better be gone by next week.
After tonight's race, I have now dropped to 9th in points. 80 points out of first.
