RACE DIARY ENTRY: 07/10/04
By Marty "Crash" Grilley
Once again I appologize because I don't remember what happened in the heat race because it has been too long in between updates, and quite frankly, the way my season has been going, I haven't had much to write about. Tonight (7/17) I was given some crap by at least 3 people at the track for not updating my site, that I thought I better get 'er done!
I take that back...I do remember what happened now that I am forced to look back on my bad luck! In the hot laps, all of the sudden, my car just shut off and would not refire. Come to find out, my module in my distributor quit. After a mad scramble to get that replaced before the heat race, I started outside front row. After the first lap, I had the lead and a caution flag came out. As soon as I let off the gas, the car just died again. After some investigating, I found that my main power wire going into the distrubutor had come apart at the terminal end and disconnected itself! Once that happens, you have no power from the battery to the motor and apparently the motor likes to have electricity from the battery in order to run! Another 5 cent part costing my a finish!
Alright. Back to work. I get to start the B in 12th of 13 cars with only the top 2 transfering to the A. This is not looking good. But as it turns out, after a wild start to the B and a couple cautions, I am finding myself in 2nd! As it turned out, I had an attack of Duh! again. When setting up the car, I thought I was putting in 1.5 inches of rear stagger in the car, but come to find out later, I had 2.5 inches of stagger, making the car too loose to have any shot at the win. I was just going to settle in for a second place finish behind Tracy Thompson and just tried to hold my position until the checkers. Well on the last lap, coming out of turn two, Jeff Coster suprised me and shot around me and took over second and the final transfer spot. Going into turn 3, Jeff went in too fast and pushed up the track and I tried to cut back down under him and retake the spot. We came across the line almost side by side with Jeff taking the final transfer spot by about a car length. I finished 3rd and was done for the night.
P.S. Burned another plug boot. Time for new wires. I am tired of these Accel wires costing me power/races.
